Concordia Lutheran Ministries Celebrates a Landmark Festival
Cabot, PA – Concordia Lutheran Ministries will hold its 125th Annual Festival on July 30 from noon until 6 p.m. behind the Haven III building at the Cabot campus. The festival will be highlighted by a worship service conducted at 3 p.m. by Rev. Barry Keurulainen, senior pastor of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Cabot.
The event will feature several different entertainers, including keyboardist Bob Vallacorsa and Ray Ryan’s New Orleans Band, as well as the Campraise Singers to carry out this year’s Dixieland theme. For children, there will be Spin Art and Miss Fanny the Clown. Also, those in attendance will have the opportunity to tour the Haven II model apartment during a 4 p.m. Open House.
To go along with the Dixieland theme, the chefs have prepared a special menu with typical picnic fare to be served both in the Haven III Dining Room and outside under the tent. The menu includes Ham Bar-B-Q, Marinated Chicken Breast, Corn on the Cob, Baked Red Potatoes and French Fries, Cole Slaw, Fruit Cup, Mini Strawberry Pie, Fruit Filled Cheesecake, and Frosted Brownies, plus Hot Dogs, Ice Cream, and Snow Cones.
Pastor Keurulainen has been serving as Senior Pastor at St. Luke Lutheran Church and School since 1982. He has enjoyed various leadership roles for the Eastern District of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS), the Synod’s Board of Evangelism Services, and the Lutheran Family Association, and Adult Gatherings for the District. He also served the Synod’s Board of Evangelism Services as a member of its task force for Witnessing to the Unchurched Family Member and on the Board of Directors of the Lutheran Family Association of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, as well as the International Pastoral Advisor for the International Lutheran Laymen’s League. Pastor Barry and his wife, Andie, who is a teacher at St. Luke School, have two daughters, Elizabeth, who is married and lives in Virginia and Jennifer, a resident of Colorado.
In addition to Pastor Keurulainen’s experience in parish ministry and outside leadership roles, he has also had the opportunity to do some writing. Concordia Publishing House published his work, “Walking in the Shadows,” a study in the area of death and grief, Lifelight Bible Studies which he co-authored on the topic of “Conflict Management” and “Romance and Sexuality,” along with devotions he wrote for the publications “Portals of Prayer” and various newsletter articles for national publications. He recently authored the 50 Days Ablaze devotions, which are intended for individual and congregational spiritual growth and commitment.
In addition, Concordia board members, Rev. Jamison Hardy, Pastor at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Mt. Lebanon; Rev. Herbert Schumm, Pastor at St. John Lutheran Church, Millvale, Rev. Paul Rist, pastor, Ascension Lutheran Church, McCandless Twp., and Rev. Mark Ruppert, vacancy pastor at First Ev. Lutheran Church, Sharpsburg, will participate as lectors. Chaplain Hartman, who coordinated the worship service, will be the liturgist.
A mass choir of Haven residents has been invited to join the Pittsburgh Lutheran Chorus for the anthem under the direction of Ruth Miller. All the bells on campus ring precisely at 3 p.m. as a call to worship. Harold Schnaible, resident in Haven I and organist at First Trinity Lutheran Church in Oakland, will play the keyboards. Gifts and tithes offered during worship will be contributed to the Lund Care Center Capital Campaign, “A Time To Build.”
Circle your calendar for July 30 and join the folks in Cabot to celebrate 125 years of providing care for God’s people. The anniversary celebration will be coupled with the Lund Care Center Expansion Grand Opening in October.
