Concordia Elects Seven Board Members

Cabot, PA – Six board members were elected to serve a three- year term and one to serve a one-year term at Concordia Lutheran Ministries’ annual meeting on Sunday, Nov. 1 in the Haven I Dining Room.

Eighteen board members comprise the governing body and represent 34 Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS) congregations in the western Pennsylvania area. 

Installed by Rev. Jack Hartman, Chaplain Director at Concordia, the elected members are: Rev. Barry Keurulainen, Rev. David L. Weeks, Chaplain Eugene Reddel, Kenneth Wallhausen, Ruth Redenbaugh, Terry Miller, and William S. Hallock.

Keith Frndak, President and CEO, said he is both impressed and delighted with the caliber of the candidates and looks forward to their strong support of the Concordia Lutheran Ministries mission of faithful caring. 

“The extent of expertise these board members bring to our organization is the foundation for our growth,” Frndak said. “It’s paramount to have a robust Board as we move forward in this economically troubled world.”

 

BOARD MEMBER PROFILES

Rev. Barry Keurulainen

Serving at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Cabot since 1982, Rev. Barry Keurulainen, senior pastor, has enjoyed various leadership roles in the LCMS Eastern District. He served the Synod’s Board of Evangelism Services and was on the Board of Directors of the Lutheran Family Association, as well as serving as the International Pastoral Advisor for the International Lutheran Laymen’s League.

Concordia Publishing House issued his works Walking in the Shadows, a study in the area of death and grief, Lifelight Bible Studies, which he co-authored on the topic of “Conflict Management” and “Romance and Sexuality,” devotions for the Portals of Prayer publications, and various newsletter articles for national publication. Most recently he authored 50 Days Ablaze! – a mission oriented devotional study. 

Rev. Keurulainen served on the Concordia Board from 1998 – 2003 and again for the past three years. He is married to Andie, a teacher at St. Luke Lutheran School, and they have two grown daughters, Elizabeth and Jennifer. Currently, “Pastor Barry” serves on the Concordia Mission and Ministry Committee and is chair of the Nominating Committee.

Rev. David L. Weeks

Rev. David L. Weeks was born and raised in Chicago. He attended Luther High School South, Concordia Teachers College – River Forest, IL, and Concordia Theological Seminary – Ft. Wayne, IND. Rev. Weeks served Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church and Sonshine Kitchen in McKeesport, PA (1980-2000); the Eastern District LCMS as Mission Executive (1999-2006); and currently Calvary Lutheran Church in Murrysville, PA since 2006.

His service also includes work with the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML) Pittsburgh Zone and Eastern District, Pittsburgh Area Lutheran Ministries, Christ Lutheran School in Forest Hills, Ministry Coaching with Pastoral Leaders, and Circuit Counselor of the Pittsburgh Southeast Circuit.

He and his wife Deborah live in Monroeville with their 13-year old daughter, Angela. They have shared a blessed life with four grown sons, Peter (wife Kristy), Jim (wife Sarah), Tim, and Jon and grandson Carter. He will serve a one-year term.

Chaplain Eugene Reddel

Born in Nebraska, Chaplain Eugene Reddel is a graduate of Concordia Academy, St. Paul; Concordia Sr. College and Concordia Seminary, St. Louis in 1965. He served as a Missionary at large for the Northern Illinois District prior to pastoring at the Chapel of the Cross Lutheran Church in N. Chicago. He began his chaplaincy career with the VA in 1967 in N. Chicago. 

He was Chief of Chaplain Service for the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System until 2008 and currently is a consultant to the VAPHS Chaplain Service, as well as adjunct faculty member at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and the Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry in Ambridge. In addition, he serves on endorsing committees for Lutheran Chaplains, the Association of Professional Chaplains and National Association of VA Chaplains, and has conducted numerous workshops for the military and VA chaplains on addiction and spirituality and religion. 

He was a recipient of the Martin of Tours Bronze Medal by the Armed Forces Commission – LCMS in 1993 and the VA Secretary’s Award as Outstanding Administrative Chaplain in 2003. Married to Miriam for 45 years, they have two sons, John, who is married with two children, and Paul. He is a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Freedom.

Kenneth Wallhausen

A member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Monroeville, Kenneth Wallhausen is a graduate of Valparaiso University in Electrical Engineering. He was general manager of electronic components maker and designer of buildings electrical systems. He served as treasurer of his congregation and for many years on the Pittsburgh Lutheran Church Extension. 

Wallhausen has been a member of the Board of Directors of Concordia Lutheran Ministries for 19 years and a former member of the Finance, Long Range Planning, Institutional Management and Building Committees.

Ruth Redenbaugh

Current member of St. John Lutheran Church in Millvale, Ruth Redenbaugh has worked for 49 years at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and is presently Night Nursing Supervisor. She graduated as a registered nurse in 1960 from Presbyterian Hospital and received her BSN from Penn State in 1972. 

A retired member of the United States Air Force reserves for 27 years, she served as a flight nurse during the Gulf War. She belongs to the Reserve Officers Organization and has held several offices including Vice President of the Air Section. Ruth is also a member of International Reserve Officers (CIOR) section of NATO, Critical Care Nurses Association; Sigma Theta Tau (Nurses Honor Society) and Military Order of War World Wars (MOWW). 

Currently, she served on this year’s Nominating Committee, having fulfilled a six-year term in 2008. Redenbaugh is also a member of the Concordia at Rebecca Residence and Good Samaritan Hospice Boards of Directors.  

Terry Miller

A Nuclear Cardiology Technologist for 35 years, Terry Miller works for Med Health Services, having spent the greatest part of his career at St. Francis Medical Center. He has been a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Lawrenceville since his marriage 33 years ago. 

He was Treasurer for the congregation for 26 years until he took the post as President three years ago. In addition, he has served as elder, Sunday School teacher and superintendent for more than 20 years, as well as chef for all special events at Zion. 

Miller was a member of the Pittsburgh Area Lutheran Ministries (PALM) board for two years where he served as treasurer for one year.  He has been a frequent Delegate for the LCMS District convention and a Thrivent contact person for Zion.  Also to his credit is his work with Campraise for 18 years.  He will serve the Pittsburgh Southwest Circuit as convention delegate next July in Houston. 

His wife Ruth is a retired music teacher, church organist and director of the Pittsburgh Lutheran Chorus. They have a daughter, Naomi and a granddaughter, Felicity. Currently, Terry is on the Mission and Ministry and Personnel and Chaplaincy Committees for the Board.

William S. Hallock

William S. Hallock became a member of Ascension Lutheran Church in 1993. Currently an Employment Specialist with Goodwill of Southwestern PA, Bill works in the deaf community, assisting deaf or deaf/blind clients find competitive employment. He also works with deaf individuals in the Lutheran faith.

Hallock has spent several summers at Concordia Theological Seminary-Fort Wayne, IN at the Church Interpreter Training Institute, first as a student, then as an instructor. Hallock is gifted in languages and holds a B.A. in German with a minor in Russian; he also speaks Spanish and is fluent in American Sign Language (ASL). Prior to his current career in social services, Hallock served as a U.S. Navy pilot, managed the flight departments for Rockwell International-Sabreliner Division and Mellon Bank, owned a graphics design business, was a pilot for USAirways and managed the IT Department at Communifax Corporation, a local marketing company.

When not studying ASL, Hallock enjoys boating, bicycling and home improvement. He is married to Kate, editor of the Pittsburgh Lutheran. Bill’s two grown daughters live in Los Angeles and St. Louis; he has four grandchildren, the oldest of which is a special needs child.  He has served on the Concordia Board since 2007 and is currently a member of the Executive, Mission and Ministry, Personnel and Chaplaincy Committees.  Bill has also been chairman of the Strategic Planning Committee for the past two years.

  

Also elected to serve on the 2010 Nominating Committee are Rev. Jamison Hardy and Milton Scott.  Special thanks to Rev. Barry Keurulainen who served as Nominating Committee chair as well as his team comprised of Ruth Redenbaugh and Ken Wallhausen.

A total of 21 churches were present represented by 46 delegates and 38 guests who were introduced to the management team, Paul Brand, CFO; Charlene Kline, VP, skilled nursing and rehab;  Brian Hortert, VP, assisted living;  Martin Trettel, CEO, home care and Larry Talmadge, VP, retirement living  as well as directors – Anzie Kelley (Good Samaritan Hospice); Ron Gribik and Brad Milliron (Concordia Medical Equipment); Cynthia Reichenbacher and Peggy Trettel (Admissions); William Giallombardo and Dino Capestrani (Concordia Visiting Nurses); Maryjane Mertz (Concordia at Ridgewood Place); Dave Drane (Facility Management); Chaplains Roger Nuerge and Paul Rist; Deaconess Megan Smith; Jennifer McIntire (Development); and Shirley Freyer (Public Relations).
