Concordia Independent Living Resident Turns 90
Cabot, PA – Concordia Lutheran Ministries Haven II resident Ruth Simmons celebrated her 90th birthday on May 14.
The former Ruth Fox was born in Cleveland, OH, the same place she married Joseph Simmons on Dec. 24, 1941. She has two children: Larry of Port Charlotte, FL and Jeanne of Baden, as well as one grandchild.
Simmons worked as a secretary until 1978, when she retired from A.W. Beattie Technical High School. She is a member at Cabot United Methodist Church and enjoys the Olympic games, tennis, and swimming.
Simmons has been at Concordia for nearly 13 years, since moving from Sun City, AZ and before that Southern Shores, NC. An extremely well traveled woman, Simmons has visited every U.S. state except Alaska.
There are a few trips in particular that she remembers fondly. In 1979 and 1982 she flew to Israel, where the guides took her group everywhere Jesus walked and taught. Another notable trip was when she and a group of other seniors hiked the Grand Canyon. Due to the high heat (over 100 F) and the weight of their water bags, the hike was extremely difficult, she said. She also took a hot air balloon ride over Sun City.
“I’m looking forward to having more adventures so I can gather more great memories,” Simmons said.
