The Family That Works Together

Cabot, PA – A mother laughs our laughter, Sheds our tears, Returns our love, Fears our fears. She lives our joys, Cares our cares, And all our hopes and dreams she shares.

The one thing poet Julia Summers left out, however, is that a mother works where we work… at least that’s the case for a number of mother/child pairings at Concordia Lutheran Ministries.

Judy & Michael Bowser

The term “honey-do list” is usually reserved for husbands and wives, but in the Lund Care Center, it’s occasionally used by mother and son duo Judy (RN) and Michael Bowser (housekeeper) – with a little prodding from residents.

“It’s funny, residents will ask when’s the next time Mike is going to be on my unit and then give me ‘honey-do lists’ for him,” Judy said.

Judy has worked at Concordia for nearly 10 years, while Michael is approaching his one-year employment anniversary. They see each other at work often, which Judy said is rewarding, as they are able to appreciate what each other does and support one another.

Michael said one of his main reasons for coming to Concordia was the compassion showed to him and his family when his grandmother was a resident here.

“I’ve never had a job where you have a chance to interact with so many people and be able to share stories and laughs,” he said.

Judy lives in Cadogan with her husband Jim, daughter Emily, and dogs Rainy and Tucker. She enjoys spending time with family, traveling, and photography in her spare time. Michael lives in Kittanning with his wife Kailey and children Kaleb and Anna. His hobbies include hunting, fishing, and camping. Both are members at North Buffalo Grace Brethren Church.

Josie & Liz Rhodaberger

Ask Concordia Nurse Aide Liz Rhodaberger what it’s like working with her mom Josie, and you can immediately tell that these two have a special relationship.

“(Working with my mom is) wonderful… she rocks my socks!” Liz said.

Josie, while not quite as boisterous as her daughter, is fittingly much more motherly in her response, as she talks about how much Liz impresses her in her work.

“We work together everyday, and I’m just so impressed with how well she does,” Josie said. “I absolutely love working with Liz.”

Josie has worked at Concordia for nearly three years, while Liz has been on board for about six months. They see each other every day, with both working on the same unit.

“I love my job so much I consider it more of a hobby,” Liz said. “I look at my residents as family and really look forward to seeing them everyday.”

“Jose” and “Gizzard” (nicknames the pair have for each other) live in Cabot with husband/dad Rodney and other children Nathaniel, Stephanie, and Jonathon. Josie enjoys camping, hiking, and walking, while Liz’s hobbies include diving, her horses, and listening to Elvis (she has over 130 of the king’s songs on her I Pod. She is also a self-professed professional candy eater, with sour patch kids being her favorite.
