Concordia at Sumner Artists Take Home 13 Ribbons | PHOTOS

It’s always been our opinion that some of the greatest, most talented and interesting people in the world have chosen to live at Concordia. We’ve been home to former white house aides/volunteers, engineers who worked on culture-changing projects, Jeopardy champions, plumbers-turned-portrait-painters, school-teachers-turned poets and so many more.

A few weeks ago, our belief was proven true again, as a number of Concordia residents were recognized for their achievements in the arts.

(Photos below) Residents at Concordia at Sumner, based in Copley, OH, won 13 ribbons in various categories at the recent Leading Age Region 5 Resident Art & Writing Show, held in Canton. Of those 13 ribbons, 11 were first, second or third place awards in a variety of categories.

According to Independent Living Program Coordinator Emily Dorland, Concordia at Sumner submitted 20 pieces from residents living in the Villas, Garden Apartments, Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing (short-term rehab or long-term nursing care).

“Our residents received the most ribbons of any senior care community in the region,” Emily said.

First place ribbons went to residents Lidia Schlosser, Judy Lasher and Barbara J. Williams. Sarah Wright, Lidia Schlosser, Barbara J. Williams and Charles Pearcy won second place ribbons. Third place winners included David, Bill Barnes, Judy Lasher and Helen Jenkins. Honorable Mentions to Cecelia Peddle and Virginia Greenwalt completed the roster of winners.

Lidia Schlosser, one of the first-place winners, is 94 years old and has lived at Sumner for 14 years. This retired nurse won in the categories of Wearable Arts and Woven Arts.

Judy Lasher was awarded first place for a blue Ice Cuff in the Jewelry category and for a piece called “Cats in the Garden” in the category of Small Quilted Works. She and her husband Edward (who submitted “Concordia Sunrise” in the Photography category) are both retired University of Akron professors of education and moved to Sumner nearly four years ago.

Barbara Williams won first place in the Needle Arts category for her piece called “Ribbon Flowers.” She and her husband Ed moved to Sumner on December 29, 2015.

“We knew the first time we came in after about five minutes that this was the place for us,” Barbara said. “I came to an open house and absolutely fell in love. Ed refused to go to the open houses for a while – but I didn’t give up. He finally gave in, and when he came here he agreed that it lived up to the hype.”

All of the pieces that were awarded first, second or third place ribbons will be displayed in Columbus at the state show in September. The Annual LeadingAge Ohio Resident Forum Art and Writing Shows have been a popular event throughout these years. In one recent year, more than 900 residents submitted entries in seven regional shows across the state.
