How to Choose the Right Type of Care for Your Loved One

How to Choose the Right Nursing Home - Resident and Nurse

Every year, over 8 million people receive long-term care services in their home or in an inpatient facility. Odds are, you know someone in that exact situation. But what if it’s your loved one who can no longer care for themselves as they once did? What if they may need additional care? Finding the right type of care is key to ensuring your loved one continues to have a high quality of life.

There are many types available including, but not limited to, In-Home Care, Memory Care, Long-Term Nursing Care, and Hospice Care. How do you know which type of care is most appropriate?

At Concordia, we understand that every person is unique and needs a plan of care that is tailored to their own needs and desires. While some people may only need minor help with a few day-to-day activities, others may need constant care at all hours of the day. The following questions may help you determine which level of care is best for your loved one’s current situation:

Is your loved one simply ready to have less responsibilities with taking care of their home, but can still perform their day-to-day activities?
If so, Retirement Living, or Independent Living as it’s sometimes called, may be the right choice for them so that they can have a worry-free lifestyle with every convenience of home.

Is your loved one still safe to live at home, but needs assistance with day-to-day activities such as showering, preparing meals, and dispensing medicine?
If so, In-Home Care may be the level of care they need. With this option, your loved one can stay in the comfort of his or her own home while still getting help with the daily activities that are becoming difficult for them to do themselves.

Do they need a higher level of around-the-clock care from various medical professionals including nurses, therapists, dieticians, etc.?
Long-Term Nursing Care, may be the solution for your loved one so that they can live in a skilled nursing facility with a customized program tailored to their needs.

Did they recently undergo surgery, suffer a fall, or were admitted into the hospital and are not ready to return home?
In this situation, Short-Term Rehabilitation may be the right fit where they would get the care they need with the goal of ensuring a quick, smooth transition back to their home environment.

Does your loved one have dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, or other memory-impairing ailments?
Memory Care can help by providing a safe, yet flourishing, environment to support those with memory impairments. At Concordia, our Personal Care and Assisted Living facilities are also equipped to handle most memory-impairment diseases.

Is your loved one suffering from an illness where a cure is no longer probable?
Hospice Care, whether in-home or inpatient hospice care, may be best when your loved one needs another level of care that concentrates on treating symptoms and ensuring comfort specific to his or her individual needs. In-Home Palliative Care may also be an option – ask Concordia Visiting Nurses about this service.
