Stay Safe and Have Fun This Winter

Winter is back and that means snow and ice are always a possibility. Regardless of what outdoor activities you may enjoy, winter safety is important to stay injury free. Not only do we need to make sure our surroundings are safe, but dressing for the weather is just as important. Let’s review some safety and clothing tips to help us enjoy this season.    

Falls are always a concern for people of all ages. Injuries from falls can happen any moment with snow-covered or icy surfaces putting us at a high risk. Here are a few things we can do to help prevent falls:

– Make sure walk ways are well lit.
– Wear appropriate footwear for the weather (boots with heavy tread).
– Take time to clear pathways of snow and ice.
– If you need an assistive device (crutches, cane, walker, rollator) use it.

Staying warm and dry in this season can at times be challenging. It is important to make sure we dress appropriately to meet these challenges. We all know the standards: wearing appropriate footwear, socks, gloves, hats and scarves. But not everyone thinks about properly layering their clothing. Layering your clothing appropriately helps keep warmth in while letting your body release heat from high-energy activities.

Follow these clothing layering tips for dressing appropriately in cold weather, especially if you think you’ll be doing an activity that exerts more energy:

– Layer 1: A moisture-wicking layer to remove sweat or excess heat from your skin (i.e. a moisture-wicking synthetic fabric shirt)
– Layer 2: A warmth layer to maintain heat. (i.e. a wool sweater)
– Layer 3: An outer shell layer to protect from wind and precipitation. (i.e. a wind-protecting coat)

Now that we have some safety awareness and dressing know-how, here are some fun winter activities for all ages. Staying active in the winter can be fun and exciting while providing some unique exercise chances. As always, consult with your healthcare professional before making any changes to your diet, exercise regimen or lifestyle.

  1. Ice skating
  2. Sled riding or snow tubing
  3. Skiing – downhill or cross country
  4. Sleigh rides
  5. Winter festivals
  6. Ice fishing
  7. Feeding birds and bird watching
  8. Snowman building
  9. Winter walks or hiking on trails or off trails with snowshoes
  10. Snowball fights and snow angels
