CONCORDIA AT REBECCA RESIDENCE

Concordia at Rebecca Residence celebrated its 125th year in service to the elderly community in 1996. And while the facility has certainly evolved since then (the home was originally for women only), delivering high quality care in a picturesque setting has always been the focus.

On October 3, 1871 the Home for Aged Protestant Women officially opened after two years of fundraising and planning. The Board of Managers, with Mary Brunot as its first president, presided over the care of 12 women.

In 1881, Jane Holmes, cousin to founder “Baltimore Jane,” donated a significant sum of money for a four-story addition to the building. Over the next several years the Board of Managers was given a number of generous gifts for use at the Home.

One of the most giving benefactors was Rosalie Spang, who donated enough money for a large addition to the Home in 1929. She also established a trust fund for future improvements to the Home.

Interaction between the Board of Managers and residents was very common, as the members frequently hosted bingo games, lectures, field trips, and luncheons. For years, every resident would receive a gardenia corsage from the Board and enjoy a dessert of their choice on their birthday.

In 1984, the name of the Home for Aged Protestant Women was formally changed to Rebecca Residence. Fifteen years later, the facility moved to West Deer Township, where it continues to offer a continuum of care including Assisted Living, Skilled Nursing Care and Rehabilitation Care.

In 2004, Concordia Lutheran Ministries acquired Rebecca Residence. Currently, the therapy department is being expanded.
