Aging and the Importance of Healthy Habits

August 29, 2014

Aging is something that no one can avoid, no matter how hard they try. While it may be impossible to totally fight it off, there are some things you can do to hopefully make the process something to look forward to, rather than dread.

Three Healthy Habits to Slow Down the Aging Process

According to US News, there are three healthy habits that can help slow down the aging process: exercise, a healthy diet, and an adequate amount of sleep. These things work together at a cellular level to maintain a person’s telomeres, the protective caps at the end of chromosomes that dictate how quickly a cell ages.

In most people, the stress of life – either physical or emotional – speeds up the shortening of telomeres, which causes a person to visibly age. But, people who maintain active lifestyles, eat healthy, and sleep well are able to fight off these stressors, thus longer maintaining their telomeres’ lengths.

Why Social Connections Matter

As a person ages, friends and companions don’t only save them from boredom and loneliness; they also save their lives. Per Web MD, a study published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health found that having good friends directly increases lifespan. People with the strongest network of friends live the longest; people with the weakest network of friends (or least number) live the shortest.

Things That Age You Prematurely

Of course, it’s not just old age that ages people: some people age prematurely while they are still relatively young. This accelerated aging often has to do with what a person is putting in their bodies or the less than desirable activities they take part in.

According to the Huffington Post, sugar, lack of exercise and watching TV are three things that age a person before their time. Watching television, in particular, can not only cause early aging but also early death: researchers from the University of Queensland found that each hour of TV watched can result in shortening life by 22 minutes. But, it’s not the TV that is inherently bad - it’s the idleness. This isn’t to say one should never catch an episode of Dallas CSI, but TV shows should be countered with real-life walks in the park or rounds of golf. Maintaining healthy habits will not only combat the signs of aging, but leave you feeling more satisfied with your life.

How Senior Living Facilities Can Help

Senior housing facilities, because they are designed with all the above in mind, are a wonderful option for people in their elderly years. These retirement communities not only provide seniors with nutritious, balanced meals, but they also allow them to meet people and spend time with others. They also keep exercise in mind, offering a wide range of recreational activities and onsite fitness centers.

Retirement communities provide seniors with the flexibility and freedom of living on their own, while providing them with the opportunities to maintain healthy habits and lifestyles to make the very most of their golden years.
