The theme of the 2013 Concordia Lutheran Ministries calendar is "Faithful Caring Our Way of Life," and each month offers a picture of a resident/patient with one of our dedicated caregivers. We thought it would be fun to tell the stories behind the models, in a series we're calling Concordia Calendar Portraits. Enjoy!
The cover picture for Concordia's 2013 calendar is a delightful combination of longevity, love and lots and lots of laughter. Garnet McCall and Terry Letzelter have known each other for nearly two decades when they met as patient and therapist and they are a familiar pair to the world around Concordia.
Originally from Long Island, Terry relocated to the Poconos region and studied at Temple University before coming to this area to begin her career as an occupational therapist 27 years ago. She was director of the therapy department at Concordia during the 1990s when she developed an outpatient and restorative care program and met "her buddy, Garnie." After three years, Terry left to pursue another position but found herself back at Concordia and said she loves what she is doing.
Married for 21 years, she and husband Larry have two sons who work in the Haven (Concordia retirement living) dining rooms. Her in-laws have even made their home in the Havens as well. A collector of antiques and a "beach bum," Terry claims to have vacationed at every shore on the eastern seaboard.
Garnet McCall moved from Sarver to Concordia Haven I in 2008. Garnie has one son, a retired school teacher who lives in Virginia. She likes all the events in personal care where she has lived for the last five years.
"They keep us happy and involve us," she said. "They don't let us sit around."
"I have no secrets," she claims. "What you see is what you get!"
Couple her fantastic sense of humor with someone a generation younger (but very much alike - Terry) and you have a party.
