The theme of the 2013 Concordia Lutheran Ministries calendar is "Faithful Caring Our Way of Life," and each month offers a picture of a resident/patient with one of our dedicated caregivers. We thought it would be fun to tell the stories behind the models, in a series we're calling Concordia Calendar Portraits.
Concordia of Fox Chapel is featured for the month of November. Enjoy!
We give special thanks for our calendar girl and guy for November. Ladies first Kelly Ellena, Activities Coordinator at Concordia of Fox Chapel feels right at home, since she grew up in nearby West Deer Twp.
"Coming to work is like being with my second family," said Kelley, who has worked with this community for the last six years. "My best friend has always been my Grandmother. She always says that I have an old soul and that's why I am so good with the elderly."
Having worked in the health care field for 16 years, first in medical assistance and then occupational therapy, she wears the telltale signs of her love of people in her ever-present smile and her interest in listening to her residents tell their life stories. Kelly enjoys cooking and baking, the outdoors, shopping and swimming. She and husband Mark live in Lower Burrell with their two dogs, Lola and Scruffy. "My greatest joy, however, is spending time with my nieces and nephew," admits Kelly. When she retires, she plans to travel.
She may have set that goal after she met resident Larry Roach, who has been all over the world. One of 12 children, Larry worked for PPG for more than 27 years. He was also Airman First Class and a K-9 Handler in the Air Force as well as a prison guard. Larry was the child who took care of his mother for many years while she was ill.
Having lived in Dorseyville and Blawnox, Concordia of Fox Chapel was in the neighborhood and the perfect choice for him 13 years ago. Larry said the staff is nice and everything is clean, but most of all, "I love to ride in the van for the outings." It's no wonder - since he loves to travel.
