There have been many questions raised recently in light of the unfortunate situation at an independent living facility in California, resulting in the death of a resident. We wanted to take a minute to reassure all of our residents, patients, families and friends of our policy and procedures.
Concordia is a CARF-CCAC accredited Aging Services Network, one of the 50 largest non-profit providers in the country. This means that we have a full continuum of care giving options for our residents - independent living, personal care, skilled nursing, physical rehabilitation and hospice - in a medical model retirement community.
The independent living apartments (at our Cabot, South Hills and Sumner locations) and villas (on our Sumner campus) are equipped with nurse call bells for emergencies. When these call bells are pulled, a nurse from our personal care or assisted living buildings is alerted and responds in minutes. When the nurses respond, they assess the resident, perform the proper care (CPR, wound dressing, etc) and decide whether or not to call emergency medical personnel. The nurses are able to access resident records if needed, which include DNR orders and physician and family contact information.
This procedure occurs every time a resident pulls his/her call bell. When residents move into a Concordia retirement living apartment or villa, they can be assured that they will be cared for in the event of an emergency.
It's important to note the difference between independent living and personal care/assisted living. While there are many subtle differences, the most notable is that there is no regular medical supervision in independent living. There are, however, many other services, such as routine maintenance, transportation for local shopping, limited medical transportation, daily scheduled activities and more.
All of this means that at Concordia, we do everything we can to ensure the safety and health of every resident in our care. Residents and families alike can rest assured that they are in the care of professional, knowledgeable caregivers at one of the top communities in the country.
