Concordia Couple Finds Happiness on Valentine’s Day

Happy Valentine’s Day from our Concordia family to yours! When we think of love, we often think of lines etched on Hallmark cards. Phrases like: “I’ll love you for eternity,” “Good things in life are better with you,” and even “The secret to a happy marriage remains a secret,” can evoke some wonderful - or even colorful memories.  

For one couple at Concordia Village of Tampa, their testament of love is far greater than anything expressed in a one-line greeting.

Allegheny Valley Resident Goes From Knee Replacement to Retirement Apartment - And Has Never Been Happier

JoAnn Paulenda had been familiar with Concordia at Cabot for most of her life. Between being a member at nearby John Huss Lutheran Church and visiting friends and loved ones, she had been to the campus a number of times. In 2011, after having both knees replaced at the age of 70, she became the person that friends and family visited, as she spent six weeks in the Lund Care Center rehabilitating.

Concordia Resident's Husband Recalls Wife's Time as a Jeopardy! Champion

In 2004, Ken Jennings became a household name after setting the record for most consecutive Jeopardy! wins: 75 victories in a row. During that run, his earnings surpassed a whopping $2.5 million. Suffice to say, one can argue that Jennings was defined by his Jeopardy! success.

A retired Awards Program Coordinator at SAE International and retired hot air balloon pilot of 20 years, Ginny Whipple now enjoys kayaking, fishing, geocaching, and photography. Just under a year ago, however, she added another hobby to her list: volunteering for Good Samaritan Hospice (GSH). Like many who are compelled to donate their time, Ginny experienced GSH care firsthand, as her mother spent her final days at the organization’s Heritage Valley inpatient unit.

Longtime Concordia resident George Boggs and his wife Mary (better known to friends and loved ones as Frances or Fran) first moved to Concordia at Cabot's Haven Apartments in October of 2001. Concerned for their wellbeing after Fran began having health problems, their children had suggested they consider moving someplace where assistance would be available to them whenever they needed it. Since they lived locally, they knew of Concordia through word-of-mouth and decided to check it out.

Say the name “Hay” in any of 20 community boards in the Akron area and it’s one that is sure to be recognized. Serving as president of the Akron Chamber of Commerce in the early 1990s, Karl Hay was the force behind the $33 million investment that helped lay the foundation for redevelopment efforts in downtown Akron. When the John S. Knight Convention Center opened in June 1994, a room was named in his honor.

The prototypical “man’s man” has quite a few defining characteristics.

He’s tough as nails. He thrives in the outdoors. He enjoys a dark beer from time to time and can fix almost any problem that befalls a domestic automobile. He puts God, his family and his country above all else.

One occasionally-regrettable characteristic is that he may not ask for help as soon as he probably should. And that can lead to trouble every so often.
