Concordia Calendar Artist Profiles: Flo Parker

When we think of famous painters, names like van Gogh, da Vinci, Monet, Rembrandt, Picasso and Warhol come to mind. However, since Concordia’s 2019 Calendar was distributed, the public has been introduced to our own artistic Hall of Fame with the resident artists whose paintings have been highlighted.

Titled “Brush Strokes,” the calendar features a different painting by a resident who lives at one of our locations each month. And each month, we’ll introduce you to the artists here. August’s artist is Flo Parker.

Happily Ever After: Concordia of Monroeville Couple Celebrates 70th Wedding Anniversary

William Schonberger met his soul mate, Roslyn Greenfield, at a Jewish youth dance in 1948, in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. According to the couple’s story, Bill was smitten. He went home and told his mother he had met the girl he was going to marry. After their courtship, they were married on July 3, 1949, at the Gemilas Chesed Synagogue in McKeesport.

Now at 91, the Schonberger’s reside at Concordia of Monroeville, where they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on July 3, in a traditional Jewish vow renewal ceremony under the chuppah surrounded by family and friends.

Titled “Brush Strokes,” each month depicts a different painting by several of our residents who live at one of our locations. And each month, we’ll introduce you to the artist, here. April’s resident artist (as well as October) is Peg Vogel, of Concordia at Sumner.

Three Residents at One Concordia Location Share 96th Birthdays Today

Warner Bros. Pictures was founded on April 4, 1923 – but the day holds special significance for some Concordia of the South Hills stars who all share the birthday.

Far from movie studios in California, in the quiet town of Ridgeway in Elk County Pennsylvania, Betty Diskin was born. George Freas Jr. arrived in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Just a few miles away in Squirrel Hill, Geraldine Yatzkan made her debut on earth.

What are the odds that three of 147 residents who chose to live at Concordia of the South Hills would not only share their retirement home, but their birthdate as well?

Concordia Couple Finds Happiness on Valentine’s Day

Happy Valentine’s Day from our Concordia family to yours! When we think of love, we often think of lines etched on Hallmark cards. Phrases like: “I’ll love you for eternity,” “Good things in life are better with you,” and even “The secret to a happy marriage remains a secret,” can evoke some wonderful - or even colorful memories.  

For one couple at Concordia Village of Tampa, their testament of love is far greater than anything expressed in a one-line greeting.

Allegheny Valley Resident Goes From Knee Replacement to Retirement Apartment - And Has Never Been Happier

JoAnn Paulenda had been familiar with Concordia at Cabot for most of her life. Between being a member at nearby John Huss Lutheran Church and visiting friends and loved ones, she had been to the campus a number of times. In 2011, after having both knees replaced at the age of 70, she became the person that friends and family visited, as she spent six weeks in the Lund Care Center rehabilitating.

Concordia Resident's Husband Recalls Wife's Time as a Jeopardy! Champion

In 2004, Ken Jennings became a household name after setting the record for most consecutive Jeopardy! wins: 75 victories in a row. During that run, his earnings surpassed a whopping $2.5 million. Suffice to say, one can argue that Jennings was defined by his Jeopardy! success.

Exceptional Stories of Care: Patient's Family Member Becomes Dedicated Volunteer

A retired Awards Program Coordinator at SAE International and retired hot air balloon pilot of 20 years, Ginny Whipple now enjoys kayaking, fishing, geocaching, and photography. Just under a year ago, however, she added another hobby to her list: volunteering for Good Samaritan Hospice (GSH). Like many who are compelled to donate their time, Ginny experienced GSH care firsthand, as her mother spent her final days at the organization’s Heritage Valley inpatient unit.
