Fall Season Brings Many Happenings Around Concordia

Every year around this time, the calendar at Concordia Lutheran Ministries reaches its breaking point, as events and activities at the various locations fill the schedule. The following happenings are open to the public please don't hesitate to get in touch with any of the contact people.

Good Samaritan Hospice to Host Plant Sale Fundraiser with Saxony Gardens Greenhouse

To raise funds for its children's bereavement camps "Camp Good SAM" and "Camp Erin," Good Samaritan Hospice, a mission of Concordia Lutheran Ministries, is hosting a fall plant sale on Sept. 15 from 10 a.m. 5 p.m. on the patio behind the Lund Care Center, 134 Marwood Rd., Jefferson Twp.

Saxony Gardens Greenhouse will supply a selection of chrysanthemums, corn shocks and other fall flowers, with 20 percent of the proceeds benefitting the camps. Cash, checks and payroll deduction for Concordia employees will be accepted forms of payment.

Good Samaritan Hospice to Host Bereavement Support Group

Good Samaritan Hospice is continuing its weekly Christ-centered support group series, Griefshare. The sessions start Sept. 22 and take place every Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Haven II second floor classroom (148 Marwood Rd.) on the Concordia at Cabot campus. The meetings are free and open to anyone dealing with grief.

Registration is preferred but walk-ins are permitted. To register or receive more information, call 1.800.720.2557 and speak with Chaplain Paul Rist.

Concordia of the South Hills Plans Fashion Show Luncheon

The First Concordia of the South Hills Fashion Show, "Fall into Fashion," is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 22 at The Club At Nevillewood in Presto, Collier Township.

Tickets are $35 per person and include six free tickets to be used for the basket auction. The menu for the event is Wedding Soup, Chicken Crepes, Sugar Snap Peas and Apple Crisp for dessert.

In addition to the show presented by Fashions by Phyllis (which has a shop in Meadowland), other vendors will include jewelry by Premier Designs, Silpada and lia Sophia, tote bags by "Thirty-One" and caramel/chocolate covered pretzels from "Pretzel Crazy." All proceeds benefit Concordia of the South Hills Caring Fund.

Concordia Institute for Lifelong Learning Fall Registration Underway

Registration is currently underway for the Fall 2011 semester of the Concordia Institute for Lifelong Learning a "senior college" designed to stimulate the mind and stay mentally sharp.

The cost for each class varies from free to $35. Classes include: Communication That Heals and Builds Relationships, Computers and the Internet, Drama from the Bible, Email Basics, History of Organized Crime, How to Honor the Divine Call to Forgive, Introduction to Ballroom Dancing: Cha-Cha and Swing, Introduction to Computers, Middle Eastern Geography and Culture, More on Calligraphy, and Organizing for Seniors

Concordia Oktoberfest, Zambelli Fireworks Scheduled for October 1

Concordia Lutheran Ministries will hold its annual Oktoberfest celebration at Haven I (112 Marwood Rd.) on Saturday, October 1 from 4 8 p.m.

Free parking and shuttle service will be available. Guests are encouraged to arrive well before the 7:45 Zambelli Fireworks display to park in the designated areas to reduce traffic and safety concerns.

Entertainment will again be provided by acclaimed musical group The Continental Dukes German Band. For the children, there will be a balloon artist, games, crafts, hayrides, a bouncer castle and more.

Tours of Lund Personal Care and Concordia Haven Apartments will be available, as well as a bus to go through Saxony Farm. Concordia Visiting Nurses will host a Flu Shot Clinic and Haven residents will have a rummage sale also.

In addition to the entertainment and tours, the Concordia food service staff will prepare a German-themed menu for everyone's enjoyment. A Quick Food Tent will be set up as well as the traditional pig roast and beer tent.

The event is open to the community and admission is free; children 12 and under will receive free food vouchers for the Quick Tent. Call Concordia Public Relations at 724.352.1571, ext. 8266 with questions.

Good Samaritan Hospice to Host Annual 5K Run/Walk

Good Samaritan Hospice will host its 10th Annual Memorial 5K Run/Walk & 1 Mile Fun Walk on Oct. 8 at the North Park Boat House, with all proceeds benefiting GSH programs for residents facing a life-limiting illness.

The day will start with a 7:30 a.m. prayer service, followed by registration at 8:00 and the Walk at 9:00. There will also be a wellness fair from 7:45-11:00 and several gift basket drawings. Registration fees are $15 until September 30; after that the cost is $20. Participants can also register their leashed dogs for $5 each as well.

Each participant will receive an event T-shirt while supplies last. For every $50 raised by an individual or team, the participant will receive a ticket for the gift basket drawings.
