National Picnic Month: Planning a Picnic for Your Older Loved Ones

August 21
+

Happy National Picnic Month! August is a great time for weddings, family reunions and the perfect simple picnic. That goes for our elderly loved ones, too! Picnics are a great way to experience fresh air, feel the warmth of sunshine and take in the scent of the outdoors ― especially for our loved ones who may be living in a personal care or assisted living facility or nursing home. While there are pros and cons to consider when planning outdoor events, with the right preparation, the pros can greatly outweigh the cons.

Choosing to take your senior loved one on an outdoor picnic can help to stimulate their senses and lift their spirits. Plus, a picnic is a great way to encourage your loved one to enjoy food and to promote the social interaction that comes with shared mealtimes. You can also invite them to get involved with the preparation, such as making sandwiches or shredding lettuce for a salad.

Concordia Retirement Living Allows Pittsburgh Couple to Create A New Lifestyle

August 8

Did you know Concordia has multiple senior care locations that offer retirement living apartments (and villas at our Sumner location in Copley, OH)? At any given time, we are serving more than 500 seniors in western PA and eastern OH in that one service line alone! And actually, by mid-September, when Highpointe at Rebecca – our newest retirement community – is open, that number will grow again.

For those unsure of what retirement living (or independent living as it's sometimes called) services involve, it offers a worry-free lifestyle for seniors, with every convenience of home. Amenities like routine maintenance, scheduled transportation, daily events/activities and much more are included. We hear a lot of great things from our residents and their families about our services, and we wanted to take the opportunity to share one of their stories with you.

We don’t have a final count yet on how many people came out to the Concordia Summer Festival on Sunday, but two things we do know: 1) At the busiest part of the day, it was standing-room only, despite our having hundreds of chairs under the tents; and 2) For the MANY people who attended, you couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day! It’s always been our opinion that some of the greatest, most talented and interesting people in the world have chosen to live at Concordia. We’ve been home to former white house aides/volunteers, engineers who worked on culture-changing projects, Jeopardy champions, plumbers-turned-portrait-painters, school-teachers-turned poets and so many more.

A few weeks ago, our belief was proven true again, as a number of Concordia residents were recognized for their achievements in the arts.
