Concordia Retirement Living Resident Stays Full of Life by Remaining Active

May 30, 2017
+

When Concordia residents explain why they chose Concordia retirement living, there are three terms they use the most: quality, security and value. What we’ve learned over the years is that those terms can have different interpretations – especially “security.” Security can be a resident’s satisfaction with the financial security Concordia provides for their estate or loved ones, physical building security or even the security of having people around who share similar interests and experiences. Concordia retirement living resident Kathy Shields falls into the latter camp, having found a new sense of belonging after moving to Concordia at Cabot.

The Benefits of Pet Therapy for Seniors

May 26, 2017
+

At Concordia, we have been bringing pet therapy services to a variety of our locations for over 15 years. We believe this form of therapy brightens the days of our residents and helps to improve socialization. We recently interviewed volunteer Mary Ann Birsa, who has been conducting pet therapy at our Concordia at Ridgewood Place location in Plum Borough. During her interview, Mary Ann described one of her greatest memories being the day one of our residents, who is very nonverbal due to a stroke, met her dog, Pepper.  “As he interacted with Pepper, he actually began to talk,” Mary Ann said. “It was such an amazing experience to witness how people interact with animals. I believe animals can see into your soul.”

The 2017 Concordia Fishing Derby for Kids was another HUGE success, as more than 700 people visited Lake Saxony, despite the chilly temperatures and threat of rain! We gave away three grand prizes this year - two bikes and a kayak - and caught the biggest fish in the event's four-year history: a 19-inch largemouth bass! Also new this year were sunglasses that were given to each kid. (Read more for photos)

We couldn’t possibly highlight every one of the many events today (we’d lose you halfway through!), but we picked some to showcase. For a complete list, click here to visit the Events & News page. And you really should check out the complete list… LOTS of great events!

Tips for Visiting a Loved One in a Nursing Home or Assisted Living Facility

May 1, 2017
+

At Concordia, we see firsthand how much our senior loved ones in a nursing home or assisted living facility enjoy having visitors on a regular basis.  It keeps them connected with their friends and family outside of their home and it breaks up their routine.  Unfortunately, many people make only brief visits to loved ones in assisted living, rehab facilities, or nursing homes -- or avoid visiting completely -- because they are worried about awkward moments
