Cabot, PA Based Organization Donates $2,000 to Local Medical Mission

Cabot, PA - Concordia Lutheran Ministries and Concordia Visiting Nurses, recently donated $2,000 to an Operation Walk surgical team from Butler.

The Butler Operation Walk team, from Tri-Rivers Surgical Associates, is led by orthopedic surgeon Thomas Muzzonigro, MD and includes OR nurses Shawnee Atkinson, Bobbi Haluka, and PA Sandy Nettrour.

Founded in 1994 by orthopedist Lawrence Dorr, MD, Operation Walk is a not-for-profit volunteer medical services organization that performs free hip and knee replacement surgeries for impoverished patients in developing countries and the United States. The Pittsburgh chapter, started in 2008 by Anthony DiGioia III, MD, will be completing their third international effort in Panama City, Panama this September.

The group brings all supplies, from joint implants to all drugs and dressings, providing over $3 million in care at no cost to the host country or patients. While on location, the Operation Walk team educates in-country orthopedic surgeons, nurses, physical therapists and other health care professionals on the most advanced treatments and surgical techniques. This is done in conjunction with surgeries to help create a lasting contribution to patients and their care in developing countries.

Concordia Lutheran Ministries, which offers a variety of senior care services in the surrounding five counties including home health care, hospice services, durable medical equipment, rehabilitation services, skilled care, personal care and independent living, has a tradition of sponsoring local and international mission efforts. They have partnered with PALM (Pittsburgh Area Lutheran Ministries) to provide grants for mission projects in western PA, such as The Sonshine Kitchen, Unity Community After School Program, Deaf Ministry, and Pittsburgh Area Lutheran Schools as well as international.
