Prior to coming to Concordia last September for rehab after a fall, she lived in her family home in the Connoquenessing area.
She and her first husband, Homer Stahl were married in her pastor’s home and had one son, Skip who is deceased. Gretchen has a granddaughter and two great grandsons.
She worked at her father’s general store, CW Nicklas Co. until he moved to California to show his prize winning dogs. Her target shooting prowess earned her the nickname “Annie Oakley” of Connoquenessing. She loves the outdoors, has authored a guide to fishing and remains an avid bird watcher.
Some of her favorite things include cardinals and Heinz pickles. Her recipe for her long life – “one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and one cup of Domino's white sugar.”
