Concordia at Sumner Resident Turns 100

Copley, OH – Concordia at Sumner independent living resident Phyllis Rowland Berry celebrated her 100th birthday on June 19.  She married James Berry at the Air Force Base in Shreveport, LA on Dec. 21, 1941. They had two sons - Tom, who lives in South Carolina, and Jim residing in Boston. The couple also had two grandchildren, Robin and Ruthie. Phyllis spent most of her time caring for her family.

Her husband was career military so they did a lot of traveling. He was Vive President of ACME prior to his retirement. She has been a member of the First Congregational Church of Akron for 67 years and enjoyed playing golf and knitting in her free time.

She was also a member of the Fairlawn Country Club, and the Philosophical Education Organization. Phyllis is a founding member of Concordia at Sumner and has lived in this community for the past 13 years. She continues to participate in community activities and exercises here three times a week.

She says the secret to living to 100 years old is, “take good care of yourself, live life healthy, eat well, and exercise.”

Concordia at Sumner will host an Open House in her honor on June 15 from 2 – 4 p.m. for all residents and staff.
