Concordia of the South Hills Resident Turns 105

Mt. Lebanon, PA - Concordia of the South Hills personal care resident Margarete "Greta" Gourse celebrates her 105th birthday today with friends.

Greta began her journey in Vienna, Austria until she and her first husband, Ernest Erdheim had to flee to Brussels, Belgium and eventually France to escape the Nazi regime. Following the end of the war, Greta returned to Belgium and was selected to teach corset making skills to a group of young women who had survived the Holocaust. When she and her husband were invited by an American cousin to move to the United States, Greta decided they would settle in San Francisco since she wanted to start life over in what she had heard was a beautiful place.

She continued working as a corsetiere at the high fashion department store, I. Magnin & Co. Tragedy struck again with the unexpected death of her husband. Greta married Milton Gourse and when he became ill, they moved to Pittsburgh to seek medical treatment. Following her husband's death, Greta moved to the Covenant in April 2004, now Concordia.

Her friends attribute her longevity to her sense of humor.
