Good Samaritan Hospice a Finalist for Community Outreach Award

Cabot, PA - Good Samaritan Hospice (GSH), a mission of Concordia Lutheran Ministries, was recently named a finalist for its children's bereavement program, Camp Good SAM. The statewide competition recognizes homecare and hospice community outreach/advocacy programs.

This award is given to an outstanding homecare or hospice program that demonstrates sustainability, staff/team involvement, measurable success and the ability to be replicated. The Pennsylvania Homecare Association (PHA) gives the award every year at its Annual Conference.

Camp Good SAM is an overnight summer bereavement camp for children ages 6 - 18 years old that has been in existence since 2007. The curriculum for the camp includes group sessions, one-on-one interaction, crafts, and recreational activities. Campers are encouraged to work through grief at their own pace, while GSH counselors foster an environment of sharing and acceptance.

Thanks to community support, grants and organizational sponsorships, the cost for Camp Good SAM has been only $15 per family. Nearly 50 children attended the camp in 2009, helping them better understand the grief process, as well as their own feelings.
