Good Samaritan Hospice Announces Camp Good SAM Dates

Cabot, PA - To help western Pennsylvania children cope with the death of a loved one, Good Samaritan Hospice (GSH), a mission of Concordia Lutheran Ministries, will host Camp Good SAM, an overnight summer bereavement camp, from Aug. 12-14 at YMCA Camp Kon-O-Kwee Spencer, 30 miles north of Pittsburgh.

This fun-filled camp lets children and adolescents ages 6 - 18 know their grief is normal and helps them face their loss. Each child is paired with a specially trained volunteer and a memorial service is held at the end of the weekend for campers and their families.

Interested campers must complete an application and participate in a brief interview before attending. Thanks to community support, grants, and organizational sponsorships, the minimal cost for Camp Good SAM is only $15 per family. Eligibility is open to all grieving children in the community.

Through supportive group sessions and one-on-one interaction, Camp Good SAM encourages children to remember those who died, acknowledge sadness, and take steps toward healing. Camp also includes fun and laughter with activities like swimming, nature hikes, climbing walls, and campfires.

Volunteers are needed as Big Buddies and cabin counselors. Other volunteer duties include assisting with crafts, sports, music, and other recreational activities. Counselors, teachers, coaches, and nurses are especially needed, but all are welcome to help. Individuals, businesses, or community groups can also sponsor a child for $200.
